My camcorder's microphone doesn't do justice to the outstanding sound quality of these homemade bookshelf speakers of unknown vintage. The bass is rich and powerful, the midrange is full and detailed, and the treble is sparkling crisp! Whoever built these speakers used really high components that are very well matched. The quality of the cosmetic finish isn't that great, but the sound is all that matters to me. A peek inside reveals really huge magnets on the woofers, which explains why these speakers are so heavy for their size!

The Dayton Audio 30W amplifier is small portable amplifier that is rated at 30W @ 15W per channel. The true output is closer to 9W/channel at 0.04% total distortion. For those who are not familiar with power settings on amplifiers - what does that mean... it means that you are able to power a nice set of book-shelf speakers and completely fill the room with sound. I bought the Dayton Amplifier to power some surface transducer speakers - mainly as a way to play around and build some speakers (See an example in the video portion of the review). While my speaker experiment was not overly successful I can still say that it was not because of the amp. The Dayton Audio 30W amp delivers impressive sound out of a small (portable package). One thing to consider, since this amplifier accepts aux inputs as the source you can use the Dayton Amplifier and a pair of bookshelf speakers and get sound that is superior to most ipod docks - at a fraction of the cost. A few notes - The Dayton Amplifier can use 8 AA batteries allowing it to provide power without being tethered to a wall outlet. - Will only accept an aux. input - the only way to use standard RCA inputs (or any other type of input) is to use a splitter or Aux-to-RCA connection. - The blue light on the front is bright and a little annoying. - Two channels - each accepting thin gauge speaker wire - Dial on the front for volume control Final Verdict - I am impressed with the Dayton Audio 30W amplifier. What you hear are those tiny little Speakers on top of the big Loudspeakers - its a pair of Yamaha NX-E100, nothing else plays the music! Believe it or not, there is NO subwoofer running! The Yamahas contain a 5inch Sub/Mid-Woofer in a ported 5L box and a 25mm softdome tweeter, thats about it. I start walking from 3 rooms away, infact from my bedroom. Even there you can feel and hear the massive bass those tiny things are producing. The sound issues that sometimes appear are from the camera microphone, it seems that its just to loud for an interference-free soundrecording. The speakers are driven by a Denon AVR2803 Receiver from 2003 - with a good stereo amp, i´m sure even more would be possible with those tiny Yamaha speakers. I also ordered the NS-777s floor standing towers + the NS-C444 center channel. These are very nice speakers but you need to break them in for a long time. These speakers have a bass reflex design eg they're ported. These speakers are also known to have a slightly recessed mid frequency output, but overall they sound very good for the money. They are perfect for home theater applications. They are clear with music but again the mids are slightly recessed. The highs on this speaker are very strong and metallic because it uses an aluminum dome tweeter. They sound similar to the titanium domes. The highs are not soft/smooth like silk/fabric domes. The metal dome coupled to the integrated waveguide disperses the highs very well though. The cabinets have a very nice glossy piano black finish to them which makes them look very expensive and classy. They are also hefty at around 12lbs each. It's unfortunate that Yamaha has stopped using their trademark white spruce cones in their speakers. Those cones were the best." "Lets just say that my roommate had this big setup of bose speakers. Around late Spring, Audioholics did a tower speaker face-off which included the Klipsch RF-62s. Klipsch very well, enjoying its clarity and high frequency definition as well as its deep bass response. Recently Audioholics was introduced to its "little brother", as it were, the RB-51 Bookshelf speakers. This speaker shares the same 3.5" x 2.5" Tractrix Horn and have a "deep throat" from which the high frequency, natural sound emanates and spreads into the listening area.
